Who Does It Best? | Guitar Profilers Compared to The Real Amplifier
#tonex #quadcortex #kemperprofiler
After receiving numerous requests to do a proper comparison between some of the most popular guitar profilers, in this video I do just that. I let you hear audio examples comparing Tonex, N.A.M, Quad Cortex and Kemper to the real amp utilizing the same volume matched re-amp track so you can hear in detail which one you feel comes closer to the real thing. I really hope you enjoy this look at these different profile solutions and how they compare to the real amp.

    I've been using the expression pedal as a volume boost for awhile now after the amp but before post effects. I assign the heel down as my rhythm volume, somewhere between 50% and 75% depending on the sound. I assign the toe down as my solo volume at 100%. I love this configuration because now I'm not limited to just on/off with my boost. I can "fade" the solo up and down to make it sound more natural, and I can put it part way up if I need a rhythm part to stand out more without ripping peoples heads off.

    Tonex is a clear winner here. Still not 100% there, but 99.5% accurate, indistinguishable in a blind test. Still keeping my amp for studio, but touring with Tonex is a no-brainer

    I was wondering what your suggestion would be for my setup. My Tonex One runs into an Ox Stomp. So I turn off the Tonex One speaker cab, compressor (or at least down, as I'm not yet sure how to save a preset) and also the reverb, because the Ox Stomp has an 1176 compressor and really nice plate reverb. Would you use the Tonex compressor as well? I could imagine maybe being used Pre but not sure it's an advantage or not. And Post seems at best redundant because I'm going into the 1176 compressor (not sure of the chain but i think the compressor is after the cab sim). Sorry I know this is bit off top for this video but really not familiar with compressors to begin with and was just starting to use the 1176 a couple of months ago, and now I have another that's in my chain if I have a good use for (probably not much funk or chickpicken). You're who I found out about how the compressor can be used Post.

    They all sound pretty good. I actually preferred tone the least on this one . Some kind of fizz or lack of tightness on the end especially. Most different was tonex and Kemper to my ears. But the Kemper was a pleasant different to me. I own all of them and a fractal fm9. The fractal and Kemper get the most use due to the incredible versatility and effects. Nam is a clear winner in terms of accuracy. But there is no all in one top notch multi effects live board. For me in, live use the Kemper and fractal are current winners. Or a midi controlled dual tonex analog board could be pretty amazing.

    I think the TONEX was the most indistinguishable from the real amp from what I hear on the headphones. I felt the Kemper was the furthest sounding. The quad cortex midrange was slightly different, the Nam was close. For me in order of who does it best: Real amp 1. Tonex 2. Nam 3. Quad 4. Kemper The tonex I think really nailed the low end and the midrange. probably 95% there IMHO.

  • @jaysmoreymusic

    Kemper is the one that sounded the most different from the real amp to my ears. But, they all sounded great. The obsession some dudes have over the 1% of accuracy between the capture tech is silly. Just pick the one that has the feature set, workflow, and UI that works best for you and you're golden.

    Agree with many excellent posters here and Jason as well. I often use a Gain block at the end of the chain or a final Comp block at the end of the chain just as Jason often uses. If I want more of something then I can adjust the appropriate paramter in the block that I want more of and adjust the end gain or compressor level as part of the ssnapshot. I may use the final output block to adjust the overall volume for that preset at stage time at the venue. But to really cut through the mix, I may need to do something else. But that requires a parrrallel path and is another story. Great content Jason. Also, thanks for keeping ti short! I love bite sized content.

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites 3 дня назад

      Thanks so much for the kind words and really glad you are enjoying what I do :-) As far as the lack of reverb, is it possible that when you transfer your tones to the Tonex One pedal that you are transferring or using a raw tone model (which will not include reverb) instead of a preset that has been saved with the reverb engaged?

  • @picksalot1

    Great tip, didn't know output could be changed per snapshot. I use an OD for solo as well as a simple EQ at end of chain with a small db increase. I can do away with that EQ block now.

  • @dsputt
    @dsputt 4 дня назад

    So I've been in the habit of adding a gain block at the end of the chain and adding a few DB that way. I like seeing that block lit/unlit when I am tweaking snapshots. When you do it Jason's way, you need to click on the output block and remember what the baseline is (in this case -1.5) to know if it is boosted. Using an added gain block also lets me adjust the overall output of the signal using the output block. I dont know if this is good or bad workflow, but it seems to work for me.

    I guess if I was totally new to guitar then the price would be the decisive factor… however, I’ve tried Amplitube a few times and been incredibly underwhelmed every time. Even when hearing more experienced guitarist use it it just sounded harsh (Chris Buck being an exception). So I’m not willing to bet anymore money on IK Multimedia. Quad Cortex may have been a great contender. I have a few of their plugins and they are really good… Line 6: I’ve owned a few Helix’es… one floor and one rack. Sounds great but I spent more time tweaking than playing, Kemper: Perfection.. or close. Set and forget. I have a few great profiles of my main amp and a great Tone King Imperial profile by Paul Davids. I’ve used it ever since the rack was released and has now ordered the Player. I mean, I could think of a few improvements for both the Kemper Rack and the Player, but even with these opportunities for improvement I’ll stick with the guns I know’ll hit the target.
